No Mr President-John Piper

St Francis of Assisi Prayer

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury,pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
and where there is sadness, joy.

O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek
to be consoled as to console;
to be understood as to understand;
to be loved as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive;
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned;
and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life. Amen

Last Gathering: This Tuesday

Hello everyone! This season of Läsare Fellowship is drawing to a close! I hope you're able to join us Tuesday night, May 5th for our last Gathering, 7:00-9:00pm.

We will be wrapping up our study on the Spiritual Disciplines by creating your own "order," "way," or spiritual "rhythms," whatever you want to call it...a plan that will help nurture and sustain your relationship with Jesus Christ.

We'll close with some yummy snacks, of course :-)

Are you looking for a new spiritual growth opportunity for the summer? Check out Calvary's Connecting Groups. More information is available at the church.

Lectio Divina

Some of you have asked for more info on Lectio Divina, here is a good article describing this ancient process of meditating on Scripture. Choose any scripture passage you want. Enjoy!

Joy and Jubilee

This week's topic: Joy and Celebration!

Tuesday April 21st, 7:00pm

Why aren't Christians more joyful?!!
Nothing will drain the life out of a person faster than putting on a facade of happiness. Join us this week as we reflect on the deep, genuine joy that comes through following the way of Jesus.

If you are interested in doing Steppin' Out with us Saturday, 4/25, 8:00-12:00, send me an email ASAP. We'll probably grab some lunch afterward.

Our FINAL Gathering: "Outlining a Way of Life" Tuesday,May 5th, 7:00pm. “One who fails to plan, plans to fail.” Just as a personal trainer builds a plan for each trainee, we will review the spiritual disciplines we've covered and begin building our own personalized plans for spiritual growth.

Hope you're enjoying the Spring!

Next Gathering: April 7th, 7:00pm

Tuesday, April 7th, 7:00pm. Calvary-Roseville, Student Center

This week at Läsare we are excited to have a guest speaker, Pastor David Burkum from Valley Christian Church. Pastor Dave shares his bible readings and reflections through his blog, Useful Breath. He is also a talented musician and song writer.
Our spiritual discipline this week is Christian Service. Pastor Dave will be exploring the question, "How can we serve Jesus with our entire lives, even in the secular workplace?"

You will not want to miss this night!

A time of prayer and fellowship to follow.

Next Gathering: April 21st.

Confession? Seriously?

Confession has been a part of the Christian faith since the early church, but many evangelical Christians (including myself) do not regularly practice it. James 5:16 says, "Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed." How can we practice confession without slipping into legalistic perfectionism?

Join us Tuesday, March 17th, 7:00pm, as we discuss the freedom and the peace that comes through confession.

"For as high as the heavens are above the earth,
so great is his steadfast love toward those who fear him;
as far as the east is from the west,
so far does he remove our transgressions from us."
-Psalm 103:11-12

Game Night! Tuesday, January 24th, 7pm

Hi everyone! Grab your favorite game and join us for game night on Tuesday, January 24th at 7:00pm. All are welcome. We will meet in a comfortable room at the church (Rm 123) since Bryce & Gina's apartment will be too small to fit 20+ people comfortably.

We will have some snacks and sodas (and maybe some more of Gina's chocolate chip cookies?) Feel free to bring anything to share. And, if you want, you can add a comment to this post to let others know.

Next Tuesday, March 3rd, we will continue our series on the Spiritual Disciplines by examining Prayer and what a prayer-filled life looks like. Come ready to grow, to share, and to be challenged.

Do you have a prayer request? Bryce would like to pray for you, bharcey@gmail.com.

Coffee Night: Tuesday, January 27th

Hey everyone! I'm excited for our first coffee night! I'm reserving the conference room at the Caribou Coffee across from Har-Mar Mall (see map below) from 7:00-8:00pm on Tuesday, January 27th. Gina and I'll be there early. All topics are open for discussion :-) If you can make it, great, if you can't, don't sweat it. Future nights we will plan on different nights to accommodate different schedules. We look forward to hanging out.

This week let's pray reading the Gospels goes well for all of us. Stay strong, stay connected, and we will be able to read through the New Testament together! Take care, all!

A Study Bible

I grew up on the NIV bible and it will always be special to me because of how God has used it to speak truth into my life. I have also enjoyed memorizing from it.

If you are looking for a really good study bible to help explain passages and explore Scripture deeper, over the past four months I have really enjoyed using the ESV Study Bible for study and personal reading. In terms of all the study notes, theological papers, maps, and other extras, it is by far the most comprehensive Study Bible out there!! It is practically a whole library in one volume. There are many great English translations out there and each translation philosophy has its strengths and weaknesses. The ESV strives for a literal interpretation while maintaining readability. There are some tough spots, but overall its seems really readable and I like the fact that it gets so parrellel to the original languages. I was introduced to the ESV at Bethel Seminary; it is the translation we most commonly use there. Talk to me (Bryce) if you are interested in getting one!

You can read more about the ESV translation here: http://www.esv.org/about/intro.

P.S. Another great, lively, readable bible is The Message, by Eugine Peterson. This dynamic translation is great for devotional reading, especially when read along side another version. Enjoy!

Christian vs. Christ Follower

This clip compares a follower of Christ to a stereotypical Christian. It humorously portrays how foolish it is when Christians only care about what is on the outside and not about what is on the inside: a heart that desires to follow Christ as a way of life.

This clip raised a good discussion the other day at church regarding the emerging term, "Christ-follower."
Is Christ-follower a helpful differentiation from "Christian," or is it another label that creates disunity rather than unity in the church? (see Eph 4:3-5) What do we do when the term "Christ-Follower" or "evangelical", or "church" or any other "label" we create as Christians no longer fits? Do we create another label? What do you think?

Truly an amazing story. This article from the Pioneer Press/LA Times describes the character of the pilot, Chesley Sullenberger: "The Moment Demanded a Miracle. He was Ready."
